Our model, Dwight’s Journal of Music (1852-81), often published European reviews and commentaries “from our far-flung correspondents.” The New Yorker later adopted the expression in a similar droll way. We carry on that tradition from time to time by sharing some such observations from one of our regular reviewers, in this case, Vance Koven, who has just returned from a short stint in old Central Europe, the heartland of the classical-music traditions on which we report.
